Most runners are familiar with plodding—that moment when your legs feel heavy, your body is exhausted, and your run turns into a slow, dragging effort just to reach the finish line.
But are you familiar with plogging? Many runners may not have heard of it, or perhaps have even practised it subconsciously without realising.
So, what exactly is plogging? Plogging began in Sweden around 2016 as an organised activity to combat plastic pollution, and it gained global popularity by 2018. In simple terms, it is the act of running while picking up litter. In other words, you kill two birds with one stone—getting exercise while helping to keep the environment clean. Hands up if you’ve already done this during your runs!
This Earth Day, why not do your part for the planet and try plogging? There’s no need for a litter picker, large trash bags, gloves, or any special gear. Just bring along a small trash bag and pick up any litter you see along your run—whether you’re in your neighbourhood park or out on a trail at MacRitchie.
Better yet, involve your running kakis or group and turn it into a joint effort. You’ll likely find many others who are happy to pitch in and do their part for the environment.
Mother Earth will thank you.
