Working out the Plan – Macro Plan

It’s been a week since the Three Musky Tears committed to train for a marathon.

Knowing that they’ve been so slack for the past few years, and by slack, it means their longest run had been no longer than 6-8km, Miles knew they had to gradually build up their mileage.

He knows from experience when they suddenly increase by too much too fast, it all leads to injury and that created another setback in their training schedule.

After doing some research from the wealth of information in the internet, it’s a matter of deciding which training schedule he’s more comfortable with.

“Our first plan is to follow Hal Higdon’s 10km Novice training program.” explained Miles.

“No time target, just easy run 3 times a week, with 2 days of cross training. Perfect for us to get back into shape with aerobic training. I would also suggest we swap the long run to Saturday, and the cross training to Sunday to suit our schedule.”

“Sounds easy! What do we do for cross-training? I hate swimming and I don’t have a bike…erm…” Wade exclaimed.

“We can also do Brisk Walking, although the mechanics of running and brisk walking is quite similar. At least the pounding our body receive from brisk walking is definitely less pronounced than running, that will give our body a much needed rest too!” suggested Gallop as he scans through the training program.

“But hey, didn’t we commit to running a marathon? Where’s the rest of the plan?” quizzes Wade.

“I’m sure Miles is more thorough than this, spill the beans Miles, let’s hear the rest!” chirped in Gallop.

With a sly smile, Miles show the Macro Plan –

“Here’s our overall plan, from almost zero to a hero, completing a marathon in 46 weeks. Yes, it looks a pretty long plan, but I figure we want to do it gradually, so as to reduce the risk of injury. So what do you guys think?” Miles revealed his Macro plan to the team.

There was silence as Wade and Gallop studied the plan intently, giving quizzical glances at Miles occasionally.

“Sounds like a plan!” Gallop finally broke the silence, grinning from ear to ear.

“I’m in!!!” Wade added, “But… can we see the rest of the schedule in full?”
