It’s back! What’s back?
The VFF? Errrr…. What’s that?
If you’ve been running or visiting MacRitchie long enough, you probably remember the mid-2000s minimalist boom. It was the era when runners everywhere traded thick, cushioned heels for ultra-thin soles, homemade sandals, or even ran completely bare feet. And right at the center of that craze were those distinctive five-toed shoes: the Vibram FiveFingers (VFF).
Whether you’re a veteran runner reminiscing about the golden age of barefoot running or a newcomer wondering what those “glove shoes” are all about, here is how the VFF phenomenon took off—and where you can grab a pair in Singapore today!
The Barefoot Boom: How It All Started
Back in the early 2000s, the global running community caught barefoot fever. The spark? A little-known indigenous tribe in Mexico called the Tarahumara. Famous for running hundreds of kilometers through rugged canyons wearing nothing more than thin tire-tread sandals (huaraches), their incredible endurance was thrust into the spotlight by Christopher McDougall’s 2009 bestseller, Born to Run.
Suddenly, runners all over the world—including right here in Singapore—wanted to emulate the Tarahumara’s light, forefoot-striking technique. Runners put aside their comfy cushioned shoes, laced up flip-flops or makeshift sandals or went barefoot and took to the roads.
But runners soon discovered that their feet could not be protected from glass and cans strewn along pavements or the sharp jagged edges of rocks in the trails. Or from abrasions running on hard grounds. And home made sandals break easily and are unreliable.
Enter the VFF: Protecting Your Toes with Ground Feel
Originally conceived in 1999 as a lightweight grip shoe for water sports and sailing, the Vibram FiveFingers launched to the general public in 2006 as an outdoor shoe.
It turned out to be the exact solution runners were looking for:
- Protection from the Elements: Individual toe slots shielded feet from sharp rocks, glass, and debris.
- Unmatched Ground Feel: The flexible rubber sole allowed natural foot articulation and sensory feedback, especially during off-road trail runs.
Singapore’s running community was quickly hooked. As trail running enjoyed a massive local resurgence during that period, local runners flocked to MacRitchie and Bukit Timah clad in VFFs.
Where Did They Go?
Just as fast as the minimalist wave crested, it seemed to fade away. Brands like VFF, Merrel Barefoot and Terra Plana gradually vanished from Singapore retail shelves.
Because the local market was relatively niche, local stock dried up. Local VFF diehards were forced to order overseas online, crossing their fingers that the sizes would fit right without a hassle-free exchange option.
