Races come and go. Memories remain. Did you manage to recognise any of the event tees and which events they were associated with? Perhaps you might still have one or 2 of these tops still with you?

For the younger folks and those waiting for the answer and results, here are the conclusion to our Photo Contest 1, proudly brought to you by Key Power Sports:

Photo 1: Shape Run

The very first all women running in Singapore, it was started in 2006 by Shape magazine, a publication of Singapore Press Holdings. In its early days, it was famously known for its very generous goodie bag and instead of a medal, the finisher medal was a pendant presented to the runners by hunky men!

The Shape Run ran for several year until its last edition in 2019.

Photo 2: Mizuno Passion Mount Faber Run

One of the very few races in Singapore that was held in the heartlands, this was the ultimate “hill” race for Singapore runners. The 10 km route took runners through the Bukit Merah estate and up and down Mount Faber, the 2nd highest hill in Singapore. With an elevation gain of 80 metres over 1.6 km, this was the ultimate 10 km race in Singapore. In 2014, the race distance was extended to 16 km but omitted Mount Faber in favour of Telok Blangah Hills and the Green Corridor.

The series was discontinued in 2015.

Photo 3: New Balance Real Run

Organised by the Home Team NS, the first few reiteration of the event was touted as the most challenging race in Singapore, comprising of a race through 3 different terrains: road, trail and sand! Initially a closed event for the police force, it was opened to the public in 2002. In the initial years, the race was held on Sentosa island where the ground were suitable for the race format. Many runners will no doubt remember the tough run through the beaches of Sentosa. It subsequently moved to the Changi area, covering the Changi Coast and the Changi Exhibition Centre.

The event eventually switched to the usual road race format probably due to the lack of suitable race route for its multi-terrain format.

Photo 4: Sundown Marathon

The first night race in Singapore was in 2008. It was also the longest running race distance at that time boasting 84 km of pure torture through the East of Singapore. The Full marathon and the 84 km route took the runners from Changi Village to East Coast Park and back making use of the park connectors.

As if 84 km was not long enough, in 2011, the 84 km event was replaced with a 100 km race! It moved from the East to the usual City centre i.e. F1 pit area in 2012. The series was not held in 2020 – 2020 due to Covid. It made a return in 2023 without the 100 km event but since then it has not been held for the past 2 years.

Photo 5: Newton Challenge

Traditionally held in the month of October, the Newton Challenge started in 2010. With distance ranging from 16 km to 32 km, many runners used this race as the final long run for participants of the annual Standard Chartered marathon in early December.

The last race in the series was held in 2017.
